The short version, if you only read one thing
- Start with what is already on the phone. Screen Time on iPhone and Family Link on Android cover downtime, app limits, content ratings and basic location for free. For a lot of families that is the entire answer.
- Buy a third-party app for one specific gap. Usually it is arrival notifications for saved places, or a locator that works across an iPhone parent and an Android child.
- Do not buy anything that promises to read messages inside other apps. On an unmodified phone that is generally not possible; products that claim it either need the device altered or mean something much narrower than you think.
- Do not rely on any of it as a safety system. Every one of these tools depends on the child's phone having battery, signal and permissions left switched on.
